Watch brilliant Nick Woltemade press conference – Wissa, “idiot” claims & life in Newcastle

After Eddie Howe spoke to the media on Tuesday afternoon, Nick Woltemade was next up at the BayArena to talk all things Newcastle United.

Big Nick has been brilliant, both on and off the pitch, since completing a £69m move from Stuttgart over the summer, although there were some bitter words from Bayern as one club official called us “idiots” for spending such a fee on the 23-year-old.

Speaking this afternoon, Woltemade has set the record straight on just how little he cares about such comments, explaining how happy he is to be at Newcastle and focused on getting a good result at Bayer Leverkusen tomorrow in the UEFA Champions League.

The 6ft 6″ striker also revealed his excitement at Yoane Wissa’s return from injury, believing they two could play together up front, before commenting on Sunday’s clash with Sunderland and comparisons to Peter Crouch as a kid!

Woltemade on Bayern comments and his move to Newcastle

“To be honest I don’t care. I don’t read it, I focus on myself and at the end I am not deciding what someone is paying for me. I am happy Newcastle has paid this for me because I am really happy in Newcastle. “I focus on myself. I saw an opportunity to play in the Champions League, the best league and a really good team. I am really happy I took the opportunity.

This club has given me a lot. I had good talks with the manager and the club and I had a good feeling about it. My start has been really well, but I think it is because the club welcomed me so good. They talked a lot with me, the players gave me a good feeling and I had a feeling that I felt like I was already longer there.”

Woltemade on Yoane Wissa “I am really excited he is back. He is a quality player and he can score goals. “He is also a very nice guy; laughing a lot and bringing positive vibes and energy to the team.” “I also think we can play together. I am excited; he’s a quality player and what’s what we need.” Woltemade on Sunday’s derby “I am really looking forward to it. It is a great game for the fans and for us players but tomorrow is also really important.

“To play Champions League is not the daily business so we want to get a great feeling by winning tomorrow ahead of the game on Sunday.” Woltemade on Peter Crouch comparisons “I remember him but if I am honest I was born in 2002 I didn’t watch him so much playing. “When I was young my manager in Bremen when I was 16 everybody called me Crouchy because of my playing style and because I looked like him because I was skinny and tall!”

Howe also commented on Woltemade today, hailing his character and humour after making an instant impression with staff, players and fans ever since his arrival:

“I think he has British humour. He came in with a very good way of approaching a transfer. He came in, felt at home, made people laugh with his humour.

“I think laughter and humour is a great way to settle in but he has gone in wholehearted to the Newcastle way of life and what the team and the city requires when you play with this football club.

“He is a funny guy and I mean that in the nicest sense. I really like being with him.”
