Rangers are pushing ahead with plans to sign AEK Athens defender James Penrice this month on loan, according to the Daily Mail.

The Light Blues have had a difficult campaign so far this season after Russell Martin oversaw a record-breaking start to the campaign, which saw him sacked in October and replaced by Danny Rohl, despite 13 new faces arriving during the summer transfer window.

Now Ibrox bosses are planning to back the new man in charge in the winter window to try and get the season back on track, and a new left-back has been deemed a top priority by the boss.

Rangers Want Penrice on Loan

James Penrice in action for Hearts

Penrice, who has been described as a 'superstar', joined Greek giants AEK Athens in a £2m deal during the summer after a fantastic season with Hearts, where he was crowned as their Player of the Year.

But the move hasn't quite worked out the way he wanted, and Rangers are now reigniting their interest after believing they had a deal wrapped up to sign him before his European adventure.

Rohl is keen to bring the 27-year-old to Ibrox on loan this month as an option to bolster his defence, with young loanee Jayden Meghoma the only natural left-back in the squad after Ridvan Yilmaz returned to Turkey in the summer. James Tavernier, Max Aarons and Derek Cornelius have all played at left-back at different points this season too.

That has seen Rangers make a new left-back a priority for this window, and there has been fresh contact over a deal in recent days.

Rangers Eyeing Several January Deals

Danny Rohl

After claiming a win over St Mirren to close out 2025, Rangers now sit third in the Scottish Premiership table, six points behind leaders Hearts.

Rohl has publicly stated that there is a belief in the changing room that Rangers can put a run together and win the league title for the first time since Steven Gerrard's reign, but fans will know that cannot happen without several new arrivals this month.
